We are glad to announce that we have just released the version of ProZ.com localized into Brazilian Portuguese.

We are glad to announce that we have just released the version of ProZ.com localized into Brazilian Portuguese.
We owe this great achievement to a group of volunteers integrated by Tomás Rosa Bueno and Hélio de Mello Filho, Luciano Espirito Santo, Carlos Angelo, Marcia Cordioli, Luís Henrique Kubota, Paulo Celestino Guimaraes, Ana Luiza Iaria, Jorge Andor and Magda Zanchetta. By adding yet another language to the localized versions of this, your language site, this team has managed to make it even more user-friendly for the translators and interpreters, language service companies and others in the language industry, all over the globe.

I enjoy Proz because the most important issue transmitted by the founder and members of staff, is fair play and good manners.
What you have publicised today, even though I congratulate the members involved in the preparation, could hurt the feelings of many other members, of this site. Portuguese is a language spoken by many different people in many different countries and origins, not only in Brazil.

We don’t see on Proz, English from England, South Africa, USA, New Zealand Australia etc. or Spanish from Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Venezuela, to mention only a few.
Fair Play, in this matter could be solved quite easy, firstly by not excluding the “fathers of the language,” Portuguese from Portugal, and secondly by removing the (BR) in front of Portuguese.
Thanks for your time and hope you give the matter the importance it requires.

Geographic distribution
Main article: Geographic distribution of Portuguese
The International Institute for the Portuguese Language logo depicts Portuguese as a language spoken in the eight corners of the world (the eight independent nations where it has official status).
Portuguese is the official language in Angola, Brazil, Portugal and São Tomé and Príncipe as first language, and the most widely used language in Mozambique. It is also one of the official languages of East Timor (with Tetum) and of the Chinese S.A.R. of Macau (with Chinese). It is widely spoken, but not official, in Andorra, Luxembourg, Namibia and Paraguay (in the latter country there were 112,520 native Portuguese speakers according to the 2002 census). Portuguese Creoles are the mother tongue of Cape Verde and part of Guinea-Bissau's population. In Cape Verde most also speak standard Portuguese and have a native level language usage.
Large Portuguese-speaking immigrant communities exist in many cities around the world, including Montreal and Toronto in Canada; Paris in France; Asunción in Paraguay; and Boston, New Bedford, Cape Cod, Fall River, Honolulu, Houston, Newark, New York City, Orlando, Miami, Providence, Sacramento in the United States; Buenos Aires in Argentina, Uruguay, and in Japan. Other countries where speakers can be found include in Andorra, Belgium, Bermuda, Switzerland and some communities in India such as Goa. Portuguese is spoken by about 187 million people in South America, 17 million in Africa, 12 million in Europe, 2 million in North America and 610,000 in Asia.
The CPLP or Community of Portuguese Language Countries is an international organization consisting of the eight independent countries which have Portuguese as an official language. Portuguese is also an official language of the European Union, Mercosul and the African Union (one of the working languages) and one of the official languages of other organizations. The Portuguese language is gaining popularity in Africa, Asia, and South America as a second language for study.
Portuguese is with Spanish the fastest growing western language, and, following estimates by UNESCO it is the language with the higher potentiality of growth as an international communication language in Africa (south) and South America. The Portuguese speaking African countries are expected to have a combined population of 83 million by 2050. After Brazil signed into the economic market of Mercosul with other South America nations, such as Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, there has been an increase in curiosity towards study of Portuguese language in those South American countries. The demographic weight of Brazil in the continent will continue to strengthen the presence of Portuguese language in the region.
The language is also starting to gain popularity in Asia, mostly due to East Timor's boost in the number of speakers in the last five years, and Macau is becoming the Chinese center for learning Portuguese, where in early 21st century, the language use was in decline, today it is growing as it became a language for opportunity due to increased Chinese diplomatic and financial ties with the Portuguese speaking countries.
In March of 2006, the Museum of the Portuguese Language, an interactive museum about the Portuguese language was founded in São Paulo, Brazil, the city with the largest number of Portuguese speakers in the world.

Thanks for your comment; we really are for fair play and for understanding.
I am sure you remember that there were discussions among the Portuguese language community about the language spoken in Brazil being different from the one used in Portugal.
We welcome teams of volunteers ready to localize the site into languages other than English. Time ago we received an offer to have it localized into Portuguese by a Brazilian team. We gratefully accepted and the results are the localization being announced in this thread.
But maybe you are right and the versions of your language are not that different. Do you think we should ask Portuguese speakers from Portugal to use this localized version and, if they like it, to announce it as "Portuguese", without reference to any country?
This would be a good solution!

I have just joined ProZ.com and found quite interesting the comments about the Portuguese language. I noticed that Maria Luisa is from Spain and I don't know what's her nationality. As a Brasilian I have to say that Portuguese from Brasil is different and there are many differences with the Portuguese spoken and written in other Portuguese spoken countries. So, I don´t find anything wrong in showing that's Portuguese from Brasil. Actually, it called my attention when I saw it was from Brasil, because otherwise it wouldn't help me much. Not that I dont like, or don´'t respect the language spoken in other Portuguese countries, quite the contrary, I find their way of speaking very nice.
Some time ago I read an article mentioning all these differences and some of the lyrics from the different Portuguese countries were quite difficult to understand. Also, Rede Globo (TV) had a series on all the Portuguese countries and one of the main things discussed was the different accents and way of speaking the language. So, it is one language, but it has many differences.
